2002 Solar Buildings Tour!
October 5, 2002, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Features of this year's tour:
- Two large solar buildings
- a new type of exhibit on this year's tour: The Genoveva
Chavez Recreation Center, designed by legendary passive solar designer Ed
Mazria and fellow architects at Mazria Riskin Odems Inc. (Click

- A Passive Solar
Firehouse, designed by Santa Fe solar architect Michael Freeman.
- The world famous and recently renovated
Balcomb House
(pictured above), designed by solar pioneer and artist
William Lumpkins : Many of the guidelines used by
passive solar designers today were developed and scientifically studied with data
from this home. Built in the late 70's, the home still performs excellently, is aesthetically beautiful, and
has been featured in Life Magazine and numerous scientific publications. The
new owner, Patricia Mullen, has also recently had a domestic solar hot water
system installed.
- The Solar Home of Amy Bunting,
featuring passive design, solar hot water, off-grid solar electricity,
energy efficient appliances. You can also see Amy's highly fuel
efficient Toyota Prius hybrid automobile:

- Several homes featuring grid - tied solar
electricity: One system is a very simple Sunny Boy based inverter grid-tied
system without battery storage back-up, the other is a custom grid - tied
system with back up.
- Participants will also
receive printed copies of NMSEA's passive solar design guidelines.
The tour runs from 10 am till 5
pm, and begins at the Chavez Center, located at 3321 Rodeo
Road.
Participants must purchase tour
guide books at the
Genoveva Chavez Recreation Center for $10/person (Free to NMSEA
members!) from 10am to 12pm.
Participants then drive to and visit each site individually, following a
suggested route and time table. Guides will be
located at each site to receive and guide visitors.
DIRECTIONS: The Genoveva Chavez Recreation
Center is located at 3321 Rodeo Road, Santa Fe. From
the St. Francis exit on I-25 (exit 282), head north on St. Francis for about 1/2
mile, turn left on Sawmill, turn right on Rodeo. Then proceed 2.44 miles to
Chavez Center (which is on the right). The information line at the
Center is 955-4000.

- 10:15 am-11:00 am: Guided Tour
